Flat Abs Secrets

Fibrous Carbs: Your Food for Flat Abs

Fibrous carbs are some of your best food choices if you are trying to lose belly fat. These are a part of one of the broad categories of carbohydrates known as complex carbohydrates, also known as polysaccharides. The other broad category of carbohydrates is the simple carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrates should be kept to a minimum if you are building abs. Also known as monosaccharides, they offer few of the benefits you gain from fibrous carbs. A belly fat diet will always be devastated when these are consumed excessively.

The real problem with simple carbs is that they cause a rapid rise in blood sugar which causes an over production of insulin. The insulin quickly clears the glucose in the bloodstream and that results in a hypoglycemic state (too low blood sugar). This results in cravings and hunger that leads to more eating. The vicious cycle continues resulting in fat being deposited and energy being depleted.

One of the major goals if you are to be successful in losing belly fat and in building abs is a steady blood sugar level. Fibrous carbs can significantly help you reach this goal.

One advantage of fibrous carbs is their long-chain structure. Due to this they break down more slowly and are not quickly digested. We do, however need to make a distinction within the broad category of complex carbs.

In addition to fibrous carbs, there are starchy complex carbs. Starch is the storage form of energy in plants just as glycogen is in human muscle tissue. These starchy carbs are found in potatoes, cereals, grains, breads, pasta, rice, oats, wheat, and beans.

Our bodies are able to completely absorb and digest all the caloric energy in starches. Therefore, the calorie density of starch is higher than fibrous carbs which are not completely absorbed.

Fibrous carbs contain an indigestible portion called fiber. It passes straight through the digestive tract without all the calories being absorbed. Here are some of the advantages of fiber:

  • gives bulk to the intestinal contents
  • promotes healthy digestion and elimination
  • speeds the transit time of food through the digestive tract
  • provides protection from gastrointestinal diseases and colon cancer

Fiber is "nature's internal cleanser." You might say it is the all-natural belly fat reducer. There really could not be a more perfect food for flat abs. A belly fat diet without fibrous carbs as a major component is less likely to succeed.

So there really are two great reasons to include a generous portion of these foods in your daily diet:

  1. Tremendous health benefits.
  2. Tremendous fat-loss benefits.

Fibrous carbs such as green vegetables don't contain many calories. With this low calorie density we are able to eat until we are full with ingesting many fattening calories. If you're building abs it is crucial to not go over your calorie limits. That's when the fat is put on.

Compare these numbers:

1 cup of french fries = 600+ calories

1 cup of broccoli = 40 calories

Due to their thermic effect, some fibrous carbs are actually said to have "negative calories." As you can easily see, this is the best food for flat abs that you could possibly consume.

Here is a list of some great fibrous carbs to help you succeed in burning fat and building a lean body:

  • broccoli
  • lettuce
  • cauliflower
  • zucchini
  • tomatoes
  • asparagus
  • green beans
